Keokuk, in the far southeast corner of the state, is about 157 road miles away (around three hours), Eddyville is about 151 road miles (around three hours) and Decatur, Illinois is about 303 road miles (around six hours). Drivers leave Independence on US-20 and IA-150.
Local facts: Independence
- Independence was founded on June 15, 1847, on the Wapsipinicon River, and had 6,064 residents at the 2020 census.
- The Wapsipinicon Mill downtown was built in 1867. It ran as a working mill until 1976, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is now a museum run by the Buchanan County Historical Society.
- The town’s 1892 Illinois Central depot, where Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley both spoke, now houses the Buchanan County Tourism Bureau.
- US-20, four lanes all the way across Iowa since 2018, meets IA-150 here, so our trucks are on a divided highway minutes after leaving the yard.
